Josh and Raul discuss Jon Scheyer turning down the Dallas Mavericks job and just how close he was to accepting it. Does the buzz around Scheyer in NBA circles affect their view of how long he might…
Not too much time, y'all, but let's talk about this coaching carousel, coaching search that was going on, referencing the Dallas Mavericks job here.
But before I get into the Shire piece, Raul, just for you, what do you make of that hire? Obviously, Dusty went to the Final Four at FAU, goes to Michigan year two, wins a title, has three guys go lottery, all upperclassmen, did it a little bit kind of differently there, immediately goes right into the pro ranks.
You got some pieces front office questionable a little bit over the last couple years in Dallas here, but just for the Dusty May side of things, what did you make of that?
Yeah, I mean, he's a coach who has really had a ton of success at everywhere he's been.
You know, it took him a little while to get started at Florida Atlantic, but in his fifth season there, he goes to the Final Fours, 35-4 record overall.
It really only takes him two years to build that program into a juggernaut, and they go on to win the title.
And he made a lot out of that team that had a pretty unconventional lineup, just massive, massive lineup with not a ton of shooting or guard play.
So it's interesting that he takes the Dallas job and that's kind of the same situation there.
And they seem to be doubling down on that.
I don't know if that's Dusty Mays influence or if it's Messiah Ujiri who kind of did the whole project six, nine in Toronto for several years.
There were like literally just every player across the roster was a forward.
Yeah.
So I would have liked to see them get a little bit more shooting, but I think that May is a clever enough coach that I think he'll find a way to make it work.
And I'm sure that Dallas telling him that they would draft one of his players had some influence on his decision there.
