In fact, if you were just to read John's Gospel and not have any of the rest of the New Testament at all, you would think that the whole thing was about the Holy Spirit because it all tracks and culminates into the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

So when John, I see no reason to doubt that the first epistle of John was not also written by the same John who wrote the gospel because the themes are basically identical, whatever anyone else might have to say about it.

And how can he say God is love? Well, because he's looking back before anything else existed, before the universe was created, any realms that there may or may not be, whatever, Before that, behind the curtain, in the infinite, unknowable, impenetrable ocean that is God, John sees the Word was face-to-face with the Father.

That relationality, that essence, essential nature of love, other-focused, self-giving, self-preferential, other-serving love, that is the foundation ground of everything else.

John is showing us something that it's impossible to know unless one has come from that place and has come to make it known to us.
