Shabbat

On Purim, Esther and Mordechai's story becomes our story.

And every Friday afternoon, wherever we are, wherever we happen to live, whatever the world around us is doing, Jewish time tells us that the week is coming to a close and Shabbat, the sacred time, is approaching.

The calendar takes history and transforms it into memory, and then takes memory and transforms it into identity.

It reminds us that these are not some historical events, events that happened a long time ago.

Understand the cycles of the moon.

Know which Torah portion we are reading and where we are in the journey of the Jewish year.

When you text your family members and friends on Friday, wish them a Shabbat Shalom.

Let's get ready for Shabbos and Yom Kippur.

I heard Reb Shlomo talk about one time someone coming into a repair shop and they've got this thing that's kind of really falling apart.

And from the point of view of the repairman, the question is, this thing like it's, you know, it needs a lot of work.

how much God has to fix it.

And we'll see as a result, not just the fixing of the entire world, not just being sealed for a good and beautiful year, but we'll see our repair, the fixing of our broken hearts.

Good Shabbos, good Shabbos.

We should all be sealed in all the good books for the best, best year ever.

I love the Torah and I love the Talmud and I love the language and I love you know, the holy days, the Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur, and I loved living in Israel in this life.

I loved going and experiencing Shabbat.

It was very similar to Seventh-day Adventist Shabbat.

We had to keep the sink kosher, you know, and You know, and then, of course, the difference is when I was studying Judaism and living in Israel, you know, you have Shabbat, and then Shabbat's over, and then, you know, you go back to live your life and stuff, whereas in Seventh-day Adventist, you have Shabbat, and then after Shabbat, you still have to go to church, and then by the time the weekend's over, you're back in school.

So it was a bit of a different, but because I did it so much as a kid, and my grandfather was really, really...

He was a big minister in Seventh-day Adventists.

And if you want them to think that Judaism is burdensome and expensive and inconvenient, keep talking like that.

But again, we can't control how they receive it, but we can certainly control how we transmit it, right? Like that when we spend extra money on Jewish education, synagogue membership, food for the holidays or Shabbat, We can say it's a privilege to spend money for something so important and valuable.

And it's not just about saying it, because as I always say, your children are psychic.

It's about how we really feel.

I just want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a gemar chatimatava.

That means that the conclusion of your judgment should be good and sweet.

And everybody have a Shabbat Shalom and an easy fast.

And God willing, may all our prayers be answered.

That's where we're introduced to the whole idea of intimacy.

And the Ibn Ezra says, and I told you on one of the Shabbat shiurim and the Medrashirim already, we're going to hear more and more about the Ibn Ezra now that we've got to know him a bit and realize what an unbelievable godel this person was, not only in his amazing chokhmah and his amazing wisdom and understanding, but in his Yerushalayim as well.

We need to take so much notice of what he says.

Now, there's another aspect to Sukkot that is not so unique from the other pilgrimage feasts, from Passover and Pentecost.

And in fact, this aspect is common to all Jewish festivals, including Shabbat.

Every biblical holiday was given to the Jewish people with three facets attached to it.

Israel was commanded to observe each of these holidays in the present.

to remember something that God did in the past, and to look forward to something that some future prophetic purpose hidden within each festival.

So, every festival that was established by God with Israel It has a past, a present, and a future facet to it.

And a good example of this, an easy example, is when Jews welcome the Shabbat every Friday evening as the sun goes down, they light two candles.
