Book of Genesis

Uh, both bear God's image.

Put this in your margin, Genesis 1:27, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him, male and female created he them." Both the male and the female, therefore, are in the image of God, and both the male and the female, therefore, are heirs of the grace of life.

1 Peter 3:7, husbands and wives are to dwell together as heirs of the grace of life.

So we are joint heirs with the Lord Jesus Christ.

This season, we're learning how to see the Bible in a fresh way that may be very different from the approaches you're familiar with.

We're exploring the Book of Genesis, and today we'll begin with a passage in Genesis four, the story of Cain and Abel.

This is a reading from the Book of Genesis, chapter four, and this is in the New Revised Standard updated edition.

"Now the man knew his wife, Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, 'I have produced a man with the help of the Lord.' Next, she bore his brother Abel.

Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the ground.

They appear as early as Genesis 3.24, as...

It is stated the cherubim are with a flaming sword and guarding the tree of life when Adam and Eve are expelled from the garden.

Most notably, their physical description is in Ezekiel 10, and they are stated to have four faces and four wings.

So to summarize angels' natures so far, based off of this episode and then the last one, they are creatures created by God who are powerful, yet limited in locality and in power itself.

We're going to flesh that out in a little bit.

We don't know when angels were made, except that they were most likely created following Genesis 1-1.

The unfallen angels are God's agents, his army, his messengers and ministers.

Yep.

And if you are, say you're reading Genesis 1, verse 1.

And you want to get an idea of commentary on that.

What does the church think? What have Christians thought about that verse? You go to the back and you look up Genesis 1-3, and it'll tell you every time, every paragraph where that verse is quoted.

It's something we value here.

So to say streets are paved with gold, it makes us get this image of it being extraordinarily elegant and beautiful.

You'll remember that there was a special blessing pronounced by Noah for the line of Shem because it was through the line of Shem that the nation of Israel would come, through Abraham and then obviously on into the future, Messiah would come.

So Genesis 11, we'll read verse 27 to 32 and then down through the first nine verses of Genesis 12.

The Bible reads, now these are the generations of Terah.

Terah begat Abram, Nahor and Haran and Haran begat Lot.

It's always been about him at the center.

From the very beginning of Genesis 1 right through to the end of Revelation, Jesus is it all.

And it's not by might, it's not by power, it's not by anything, but it's by the Spirit of the Lord, the finished work of Jesus flowing to you today.

That's how you can have faith.

That's what we're told today.

In Genesis 1, verses 26 and 27, and therefore being made in God's image, we're able to commune with God, actually to know Him, to hear from Him, and to praise Him, doing it with our minds and by words.

Here's an interesting comparison that one of the writers brings out, talking about the worship of the heavenly bodies.

as compared with the worship of human beings.
