411 - The Goonies (1985)

[upbeat rock music] I did just go see 2001: A Space Odyssey in theaters again for the first time-

Oh, man

...

in a long t- yeah.

I've still never seen it on a big screen.

Really?

Yep.

It's, it's, it's, it's...

This is, I, I realize, my third time seeing it on the big screen.

Wow.

Yeah.

I went with Ben back in the day when he came to the, the, when he came to LA that one time.

We went to the Arclight, Hollywood.

They were, like, showing it at o- a certain point.

Uh, I went to it at the NuArt.

I, I forgot about the one I went to the, when I went to the NuArt, uh, for some reason.

Uh, 'cause they were, I think they were doing, like, a Kubrick series at that point, and then saw it.

They just, they just, uh, reopened.

For those that are in Los Angeles, but they're, they're the Westwood, the, it used to be the Fox Westwood Village.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah, yeah.

Now it's c- now it's called the Directors Village.

Oh, okay.

So, it, it, it was bought several years ago by Jason Reitman, like, kind of a, a, a group of filmmakers, like Spielberg and, uh, uh, like twen- I think C- uh, Chloe Zhao maybe.

Like, 20 filmmakers bought it, and now it's, like, partnered with American C- American Cinematheque, and they've kind of r- reopened after being closed for a while, and they're doing kind of a big Odyssey run coming up.

Nice.

And to kind of prep for the Odyssey run, they started running, like, old 70 millimeter films.

So they did Lawrence of Arabia, they did 2001: A Space Odyssey, several other ones.

They're doing, like, a, like, a, a full month of Odyssey, and they're closing down for the whole of the year and renovating the theater as well.

And it's, like, a 1,400 s- seat theater.

It's one of the biggest theaters in Los Angeles.

Did you ever go-

Mm-hmm

... to that theater when you were here?

I did.

I can't remember now what it, it was, it was to see something new, and I was just up in that area.

There used to be a sushi place I loved around the corner from there, so I was just like, "Yeah, I'll go grab some sushi and go see something there." But I can't even recall what it is now.

The first one I saw there was Mad Max: Fury Road.

Oh, no way.

'Cause I remember we, you guys saw it.

Mm-hmm.

Did you see it at USC?

Yeah.

Yeah.

Oh, yeah.

At SC.

[laughs]

Opening night.

It was the night of the premiere.

Yeah.

I didn't get to see it there, and so I think it was, oh gosh, was it Don Hall that was saying, like, "If you sh- if you see it, you gotta see it, like, in a Dolby Atmos theater."

Mm-hmm.

Yeah.

Uh, Don Hall I think passed away last year, sadly.

He was our, like, one of our, our opening, like, intro to film professors at USC, but he was a sound guy.

And he was like, "Yeah, you gotta see it Dolby Atmos." And that Westwood Vill- that theater was, like, one of the first two theaters in Los Angeles to have Dolby Atmos, I believe, and I remember seeing Mad Max: Fury Road knowing nothing really about it.

[laughs]

Yeah.

I think I'd heard from you, and I would, starting to see, like, when I would go to Facebook for people, like, reviewing movie, like, not reviewing movies, but just said, "Oh my God, I just saw this movie." And people were starting trickling from the East Coast of, like, "Yo, Mad Max: Fury Road was great," and I was like, "Okay, let me see how this is."

[laughs]

And it was, like, me and 15 other people in this very large, like, cavernous theater, and I remember walking out just being so pumped [laughs] after-

... seeing it.
