2001: A Space Odyssey

Says, "AI is only a threat to humanity if it's owned and controlled by a bunch of technocrats who think most of us are useless eaters." And Dan Atkinson, 6967, says, "I grew up watching Terminator, and Sarah Connor told us back in the '90s about the data centers and AI dystopian future.

They warn that humans are unable to keep it on the leash." Crikey, in 1973, I watched HAL, uh, go out of control in, uh, in, um, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Uh, you've no idea how far distant 2001 seemed in 1973.

[laughs] And Bumbling Boris Buffoon says, "AI agrees that it's better to leave the destruction of mankind to Donald Trump." Let's go to England, Redcar, where Christopher, the people's poet, wants to talk about the by-election.

But this is what we love, and I'm a big, big Kubrick fan.

And the boldness of his films is just... 2001: A Space Odyssey, and even A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining, which is in my top 10 all time.

And I wanna thank you both for coming on.

This was a pretty awesome conversation.

Isn't that funny? Although I think, like, I might, I might just be pulling this out of my memory of what, uh, Casey Dreier said during one of our long ago COVID hangouts.

We watched 2001: A Space Odyssey, and they had some kind of, like, tablet in there that was hand-drawn before computers ever really, like, existed in that capacity with screens.

So tablets I think go back way further than even Star Trek.

Oh, undoubtedly.

There's maybe a little more to offer normies than that, but I think it's, it's partly misdirection to make people think it's a satire.

You know, in conspiracy theories, the other big takeaway of the movie is, why it's so important is the revelation seems to miss a lot of people who watch it superficially, but it's right there in the climactic scene that we're definitely gonna analyze with the songwriter is the big message is that whyev- w- for whatever reason it's being made, culture is synthetic, and it's being made for reasons that the average person doesn't understand.

It involves what we call deep politics.

It involves behind the scenes, uh, power or pr- covert operations.

Um, and, and that's, whatever else, you know, the movie is saying, uh, whatever else the plot is seems to be saying, this seems to, you know, pyramid cults and, and whatever, I mean, that is, that's a...

And that message gets lost, I guess, in, in the rest of it, but it's culture is synthetic.

But we don't want to necessarily promote, as, as, as, uh, longtime listeners will know, uh, the, you know, people to- the idea that people should watch all of these films that we analyze, and this one does have a lot of, uh, very graphic sexuality and some, some violent shots that are meant to be very jarring.

And I think one in particular that's a, you know, that's a dead giveaway that there's something, that there's real contempt for the audience here is the, uh, I, I don't even [laughs] I, I mean, I even feel hesitant to bring it up 'cause I dislike it so much.

We've been conditioned by movies like The Terminator to expect that if AI turns on us, it will because it wakes up, develops consciousness, and decides humanity is evil.

They say the reality is probably closer to Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey.

That it's Hal, the supercomputer, does not experience a sudden emotional rebellion or hatred.

Hal is given a rigid directive.

But you're, you know, what are people saying when you're talking to them and kind of the fears of like what an agent or the kind of their perception of it?

Yeah, so I do think it's a little Terminator, right? Or I'm a big Space Odyssey fan.

I think there are people out there who think, you know, this is Hal taking over the world.

And that's not the case, right? Like you were saying, there are guardrails, there are safeguards on all of these systems.

bullshit.

Yeah, it's like the end of 2001 Space Odyssey.

Okay, I could actually get behind that.

So Arthur C. Clarke's work is a treasure trove of data, by the way, uh, which he was still working on with Stanley Kubrick when they did 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Well, two, my position is 2001 looks really interesting with respect to what's happening today with AI and with government management of UFOs.
