The Duffer Brothers wanted this episode to capture that exact Mideast phenomenon where the climate-controlled mall became the absolute social epicenter for teenagers, completely killing off the traditional downtown business district.

I also love the reference to the actual rats in the episode as well as to what the kids are doing this episode.

Before it became Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers originally developed this show under the little title Montauk.

The original concept was actually supposed to take place in Montauk, New York,

Which means if you've watched Eleven sitting inside of a laboratory using psychic abilities, kids being experimented on, government scientists doing some shady shit, portals opening, and something horrible coming through, now you understand why we've spent this entire episode talking about Montauk.

Because there is some truth to things.

And I feel like because the Duffer Brothers couldn't secure the actual Camp Hero, aka Montauk Base, as a filming location leads me to believe there's more to the story that they don't want us to know.
