T-Bob Hebert is back for another episode of Wake Up Barstool Tailgate! The crew debates the potential expansion of the College Football Playoff to 24 teams in 2027. Is a bigger playoff good for…
Uh, and look man, in this job, I understand that, uh, when it comes to topics, we are supposed to have very, very black and white, binary, strong opinions, uh, one way or another, and that, that's how you rise to the top, and I'm not...
That, that is, that is the objective truth, right? Um, you get to the top by saying things that are bombastic, that, that elicit a, an emotional response out of people.
And so yeah, when we do Wake Up Barstool, and you know, I, I, I try not to give into that to where I'm ever, like, truly faking things, but sometimes you can accentuate.
You know, you gotta put your thumb on the scale, maybe go a bit harder here because you're trying to get more clicks, you're trying to get more views.
Uh, but that's why I like a show like this, 'cause I think this is like... can be, like, a very honest forum.
And so when you're talking about the 2014 playoff, it's, uh- I don't think it's...
Like, I do think there's a lot of positive, and I think there's a lot of negative.
Um, if we wanna start with the negative, 'cause it's kind of been beat to, to, to, to, to, it's kinda been beat to death almost at this point a little bit.
Look, the bottom line is college football's the second most popular sport in America, and it's changed more than any sport that we've really frankly ever seen.
Not saying there haven't been change in other sports, but, but the entire fabric of the sport has changed.
And ag- granted, a lot of that was 'cause we had an amateurism model that was illegal, should've been illegal for 100 years, that we accepted as truth.
And so we fell in love with this thing that was, uh, uh, uh, really flawed in a lot of ways.
Um, but if you were a college football fan, and in, in, in part, like, w- a lot of the things that appealed to you are, are now kinda gone, right? Watching a player come up, developing relationships with them, watching them go from a freshman to then a sophomore, and then they're a super senior and they're incredible and, and, and, and your team getting better and better and, and, and the regular season.
Games that had massive elimination stakes that could take place, sometimes it felt like off the bat.
And granted, they still won the Rose Bowl that year, but they didn't get to go to the Natty.
