Pastors Bryan Wolfmueller and Andrew Packer answer your theological and Biblical questions. In this episode they take up the question: - Was luther a Calvinist? - When is it time to progress to…
Bryan WolfmuellerHostAndrew PackerHostI am a new Lutheran, and I recently finished reading The Bondage of the Will, which in hindsight was probably not the best starting place for Luther outside the Book of Concord.
I know that Lutheran theology is not identical to Luther's, but he seemed very comfortable, possibly more comfortable than Calvinists I know, with the idea of God choosing or predestining people for hell.
Is this just something that Lutherans disagree with him on, or am I reading this wrong?
Um, I actually wrote a whole paper on this in seminary that, that Luther gets rid of some distinctions, uh, in there and we don't need to get into all the weeds on that, but has surrounding absolute necessity.
It says they recommend the bondage of the will, basically in light of his Genesis commentary, that little note about that one thing.
And so if you want to know what they believe Luther was teaching and how best to understand bondage of the will, I would read the formula of Concord on election.
If you want to understand predestination, Read the Formula of Concord, Article 11 on election.
