College football has officially lost its mind. Two weeks of chaos, five top-seven teams falling in one Saturday, and a playoff expansion that changes everything - including whether the regular season…
And on top of that too, it looks like we're doing the 2014 playoff, which just conveniently got thrown in over the weekend.
Dropped in conveniently over a weekend of shock headlines.
That's some good news.
We probably should lead with that really.
It's been announced that the college football playoff is going to be expanded to 24 teams as of next season, so a very quick turnaround.
Having gone from a four-team playoff to taking three years to decide whether they should have a 12-team playoffs.
That's lasted for three years and now we're at the stage where 24 teams will contest the playoff for the national championship in 2028 or January 2028.
So let's talk about that first off, actually.
What are your thoughts on that? It's a strange decision, isn't it?
Yeah, I think for the first time, ESPN is the sole broadcaster for that.
And I think it's pretty fair to say that the direction that the sport was going, we're sort of always going to go toward that model.
And as the sport, as we've sort of seen with the destruction of the Pac-12 pandemic, we're sort of looking to just like increase the revenue.
So I wasn't like super shocked that this ended up coming out.
I think we've obviously, we've been expanding now almost exponentially, literally and figuratively the size of the playoff for the last few years.
So I wasn't surprised to see it happen.
I will say this.
I'm actually of two minds.
So I think like most people, my initial reaction is like, I think that this is too big.
And I, cause I mean the NFL playoffs are 16 and, And we're up to 24 now.
And 24 feels like a weird number also because the arbitrary 25 teams are ranked.
So basically you're saying now that every ranked team gets in.
And the thing that you've always heard me say on the show is like at any given season, there's probably only ever like six teams that are really capable of winning the championship.
And the reason I bring that up is I think this is the first year...
And I think at this point last year, I remember us talking about how we thought that the top of the Big Ten was better than the top of the SEC.
And I think we were pretty comfortable saying that at this point of the year.
