The Texans Defense Is Broken. How Did It Get So Bad?

**What happened to the Houston Texans defense?** Ten months ago, the Texans had one of the most intimidating defenses in the NFL. Now? They're getting pushed around, missing tackles, committing penalties, and struggling to stop just about anybody. In Episode 15 of *Playbook Optional*, I'm breaking down Houston's embarrassing 27–21 overtime loss to the New York Giants—a defeat that sends the Texans into their bye week at 2–5 with far more questions than answers. I was inside the stadium for this one, and what I witnessed was incredibly disappointing. The Giants controlled the line of scrimmage, rushed for 188 yards, and needed just two plays to finish off Houston in overtime. Where did the Texans' defensive swagger go? We examine the tackling problems, lack of pressure from the front four, communication breakdowns, and an alarming number of penalties. More importantly, can DeMeco Ryans fix these problems before the season slips away? C.J. Stroud and the offense weren't blameless, either. After showing encouraging progress against Jacksonville in London, the offense struggled to find its rhythm against New York. We discuss Stroud's inconsistent afternoon, missed opportunities, third-down struggles, and the emotional return of Tank Dell. Plus, some thoughts from the weekend: - Northwestern football keeps winning, but a major test awaits against Oregon. - Why aren't the Houston Dynamo generating more excitement in a city that just experienced World Cup fever? - A proud dad moment from my son's Little League game. - And the joys of surviving Houston's fall allergy season. **The Texans still have time to turn things around. But first, they need to rediscover the identity that made them dangerous in the first place.** That's the conversation on Episode 15 of *Playbook Optional*. *Games have playbooks. Life doesn't.* #HoustonTexans #DeMecoRyans #CJStroud #NFL #PlaybookOptional
