History in Five Songs Episode 380: Modest Metal Wins of the ‘90s

All right, so our first category here, this is a fond metal win that I always remember.

This was when, you know, all through that period running the magazine, hair metal was as dead as a doorknob.

You cannot imagine how it was just absolutely ridiculed and put down.

But in the late 90s, there was an attempt at a hair metal revival.

Now, it didn't really work.

But it did work in the live environment and and the way it kind of worked.

And this is the fond memory I have of this.

I was not even a Poison fan until sort of this period.

And I got to interview the guys in person and on the phone.

And they were thoughtful and pretty interesting dudes.

But the Poison tour started in 1999 and then this continued on.

So but it does start in the 90s.

I guess it's in the summer.

This is the 1999 Greatest Hits reunion tour, also promoted as Exiled for Mainstream.

There you go.

Or Summer Jam 99.

38 confirmed U.S. dates, blah, blah, blah.

Anyways, May through to July.

And the whole point here was that hey, can hair metal play the places hair metal was used to playing if we put together a really good package? So there was Rat, Great White and L.A.

Guns involved in that as well.

And, you know, Poison would start playing the play in the sheds.

And so I remember living through this period of the magazine, going to all these concerts for free and meeting the bands backstage and whatnot.

Poison, definitely.

I remember Cinderella.

I remember going to Watertown, New York and seeing a package tour that had Dokken and Quiet Riot.
