A Walk Through Hebrews

We're looking at something that's a little bit different.

Oftentimes we talk about the epistle to the Hebrews, but it's not really a letter.

The word epistle is just a fancy way to say a letter.

It's actually a sermon.

A letter would start off, I, Paul, to so-and-so.

He just goes on and it's a lengthy sermon.

Now, because there's no one starting off saying, I, Paul, It's become fashionable, especially in the last 150 years or so, to say if you're scholarly, you're willing to say it might not have been Paul.

It might have been Barnabas or Apollos.

And that's basically what we were taught when we went through our seminary education.

But as I've studied church history, and I really rely on the early church fathers, there was little doubt that Paul wrote Hebrews.

Clement of Alexandria in the 100s said that Paul wrote this book.

origin in the early 200s said that paul wrote this book we called athanasius the guy that helped us with the nicene creed the trinity he put out a an easter letter and he listed these are the 27 books that are are the canon for us the authoritative verses books for us and he put hebrews in the list of paul's work so athanasius said that paul did it so a It's almost like we're being peer pressured that if you say Paul said, then you're just not scholarly.

Well, I'm 71.

I don't care.

So I'm going to say all night long, Paul said, because that's what Athanasius and what Clement of Alexandria and what Origen and others said.

So I'm going to go with them.
