The Sabbath Day or the Lord’s Day—Which?
J
33:45J. Vernon McGeeSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
There were a group of people that rose, even in the early church, the Ebionites.
J
33:50J. Vernon McGeeSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
They were called heretics then.
J
33:52J. Vernon McGeeSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
By the 6th and 7th century, they had called themselves Sabbatarians.
J
33:58J. Vernon McGeeSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
And it was not until you come to the 17th century, when at that time the Puritan theology became so dominant, and legalistic that they began to call themselves then Seventh-day Baptists.
J
34:14J. Vernon McGeeSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
And all of the legalists today get the seventh day from them.

And so the apostolic church, as scripture testifies repeatedly, met on the first day of the week.
R
16:31R. Scott ClarkHOST
And scripture even calls it in Revelation 1.10, the Lord's day, which is why we're not Saturday Sabbatarians.
R
16:39R. Scott ClarkHOST
We're not Saturday Sabbatarians.
R
16:40R. Scott ClarkHOST
We're Christian Sabbatarians, if you will.
R
16:43R. Scott ClarkHOST
We ought not to use, I don't think, in light of the Reformed theology, piety, and practice, in light of the Reformed confession, the word Sabbatarian as a pejorative.
R
16:51R. Scott ClarkHOST
Now, I understand that it has been, and if you read the book, Recovering the Reformed Confession, there's an entire chapter on the Sabbath, and I can't do all of that material here in this broadcast.

Weak is hardly the word I should have used.
C
15:20Clive CatterallNARRATOR
His rebuke of the Sabbatarians, his personal violence to the hucksters, his outbursts against the Pharisees, his rather unreasoning petulance against the fig tree because it bore no fruit at the wrong season of the year, his very human feeling towards the housewife who bustled about when he was talking, his gratification that the ointment should have been used for him instead of being devoted to the poor, his self-distrust before the crisis.
C
15:43Clive CatterallNARRATOR
These make me realize and love the man.
C

You are a Unitarian then, or rather perhaps a mere deist, said the curate with a combative flush.

5.48 Stephen J. Wellum, David Schrock, & Trent Hunter • Interview • "Reflections on the Law of God in Scripture and Theology"
S
42:42Stephen WellumGUEST
But this is a handy device to say, "Here's the sum total of natural moral law," right? Now, the reason that people have hesitated with that is because obviously of the Sabbath debate, right? And, uh, that's the elephant in the room.
S
42:58Stephen WellumGUEST
Uh, so can you demonstrate canonically that the Sabbath works as natural law, as universal moral law for all people, all places, all times? And then of course, we get into our Sabbatarian debates.
S
43:11Stephen WellumGUEST
I myself don't think you can do that.
S
43:15Stephen WellumGUEST
I don't think it has canonical weight.
10 MINS LATER
S
52:55Stephen WellumGUEST
And I'm happy to say, and, uh, this, this...
S
52:58Stephen WellumGUEST
You know, we'll, we'll get to the Sabbath.
S
52:59Stephen WellumGUEST
I obey the Sabbath, but I don't obey the Sabbath like the Sabbatarians.
S
53:03Stephen WellumGUEST
I obey the Sabbath in its intent in the old covenant as it functions to ultimately point me forward to the Sabbath rest that comes in Christ that I now must enter, uh, Hebrews three and four and, and, and so on.
Sabbath Rest

But basic, the basic command is given in one of the Ten Commandments, and not later on in the case law or the ceremonial law that follows in Exodus and Leviticus and Numbers, Deuteronomy.
S
18:18Stephen MurrayHOST
And so that's got to give you pause, even if you're one of the most ardent anti-Sabbatarians.
S
18:22Stephen MurrayHOST
You're going to say, "Well, why is it there? Why not later?" I, I need to confess, I was actually an anti- an ardent anti-Sabbatarian when I first started out in ministry, the church that I was in.
S
18:34Stephen MurrayHOST
This is now like twenty-five years ago.
S
19:02Stephen MurrayHOST
Because let's be honest, we are never gonna debate the ongoing applicability, the ongoing moral applicability of the other nine commandments, right? There's no debate about murder or theft or, um, lying.
S
19:17Stephen MurrayHOST
There are no serious Christians going around sleeping with other people's spouses and going, "Well, you know, I'm not under Moses, I'm under grace now." And if you are doing that, then stop doing that, repent, and read your Bible properly.
S
19:33Stephen MurrayHOST
But if the other nine commandments have such abiding moral force, why not the fourth? Now, I know that some anti-Sabbatarians, because I used to say this myself, protest, and they say, "Well, if you look at the, if you look at the nine command- the other nine commandments, Jesus expliter- explicitly reiterates those other nine commandments in the New Testament, but not the fourth." I want to say, friends, I think that's a very poor argument from silence, and a very bad way to interpret the Bible, and I'm also not exactly sure that it's true either.
S
20:07Stephen MurrayHOST
Just because Jesus doesn't explicitly reiterate an Old Testament command doesn't mean you're just sort of free to ignore that Old Testament command.

We are going to be persecuted for our beliefs.
V
40:23Victor KubikHOST
Believe me, I know persecution, religious persecution, from working with Sabbatarians in Ukraine and talking to those people of what they had to do in order to evangelize and to do their work in a time when they could lose their jobs, they could lose everything for just owning a Bible and what they had to do.
V
40:40Victor KubikHOST
We've had none of that.
V
40:42Victor KubikHOST
Will God have to toughen us up through some things like that to really bring out the best? Or can we take a look at what we should be doing ourselves in preparing for this? Whenever I hear complaints about anything in America, believe me, I laugh it off.
