You find the Shiites.

You ever seen the Shiites? Shiite Muslims in Iran and other places, they self-flagellate.

They hit themselves till they bleed.

They have other people hitting them, whip themselves.

May Allah Ta'ala increase his darajats.

And this is the, the benefit of, uh, learning Islam, the benefit of teaching Islam that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala causes your name and causes your memory to remain long after you have gone.

Uh, we are talking about somebody who, uh, who died in, uh, eight fifty-one.

And today it is-- this year is, uh, twenty twenty-six.

So over a thousand years ago, and we still take his name, and we take his name with, uh, respect.

Not because we are connected in some other way, but because of Islam and because of the teaching of Islam.

As a scholar of Islam in America, as a scholar of religion and race, I cannot help but to think always when it comes to Mayor Mamdani how ironic it is.

And ironic might even be not even the best word for it, but how truly mind-blowing it is that Zohran Mamdani is the sitting mayor of New York City during the 25th anniversary of 9/11, when he is constantly condemned as a bad Muslim.

And that 20 years ago, his father, Mahmood Mamdani, who was a professor at Columbia, literally wrote the book over 20 years ago called Good Muslim, Bad Muslim, just a few years after September 11th.

He wrote this book in '05.

And today I want us to return to Ma- Mamdani's book to understand why it is that Zohran Mamdani faces the backlash that he does in this moment, and how he's always going to be cast as a good Muslim to some and a bad Muslim to others, and how regardless of what he does, that is going to be a discourse that we encounter.

So what did Mahmood Mamdani mean when he was talking about Good Muslim, Bad Muslim? As a scholar of Islam, the good Muslim, bad Muslim binary, when I first started getting into academia in this field of study, was such a prevailing discourse.

Meaning, good Muslim, bad Muslim is one of those frameworks that becomes so ubiquitous and so used that sometimes you almost forget that there's a person who coined this or was the person who really gave the theoretical structuring and bona fides to what this term means.
