All right so we're continuing our study of Matthew we're in Matthew chapter twelve and you recall we've said this several times when Matthew wrote this gospel it didn't have the verse numbers in the chapters and so I think it's instructive this time particularly to go back up and just look at where chapter eleven ended because we're going to begin this chapter talking about the Sabbath.
and the Sabbath means day of rest and according to the Jewish clock and calendar the Sabbath actually begins on Friday at sunset and it ended Saturday at sunset and let me just keep your finger here in Matthew for a minute I just want to go show you since we're going to be studying the Sabbath just a couple of Old Testament scriptures that talk about the Sabbath if you flip over all the way go back over to Exodus second book of the Bible And if you'll go to Exodus chapter 20, and I'll begin in verse 8.
In it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant, or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth the sea and all that is in them and rested on the seventh day.
All right so that's where the Sabbath comes from and let me also show you if you just go over a few chapters still in Exodus go over to Exodus thirty one.
For whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people.
For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a Sabbath of complete rest, holy to the Lord.
And we see as we closed out last time in chapter 11 Jesus says come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you shall find rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my load is light.
So he's talking about rest, and so I think it's instructive that Matthew then leads right into Jesus' teaching about the Sabbath.
