Book of Deuteronomy

You can't wait for the tasks to be over in order for there to then be connection time.

And when you think of the, what's the, the popular Deuterom- Deuteronomy passage, when you're gonna teach the precepts to your children when you walk by the way and when you lay down at night and-

I wanna say it's Deuteronomy 6, but I don't know if that-

Do you remember how it goes? [clears throat]

No.

Presumptuously and with incorrect reasoning, they made a covenant that couldn't be broken.

This misguided and unwise decision brought ungodly Canaanites into their community, which in Deuteronomy chapter seven, God had forbidden.

In all of our decisions, we really need to look to the Lord for wisdom and guidance so that we can avoid unnecessary sorrows and tragedies.

But when we forget and we turn away, God has a way of making good out of bad.

And I've pinpointed any number of what I would call bumper stickers that we've used to talk about what we do.

He points to Torah concepts such as B'tselem Elohim in Genesis, that all people are created in God's image, and to direct commandments like justice, justice you shall pursue, which is found in Deuteronomy.

It also allowed us to hang out with other like-minded people, some of whom were people of faith, and others were not people of faith.

So far, there's nothing really wrong with this.

And I think Judaism has a number of mechanisms and- Teachings, perspectives that would encourage us to release some of the expectations of completion.

Moses doesn't make it into the Promised Land, right? The generation that escaped Egypt doesn't actually make it into the Promised Land, outside of a couple exceptions of individual people.

There's a practice that we read the last words of Deuteronomy and the first words of Genesis in a single breath to remind us that the work of creation is always ongoing, that there is no final conclusion, that we don't actually ever get there.

And at the same time, on the other end of the spectrum, we pray, we sing, we write, we think about the world to come.

Like, cause again, when you're reading in Jude, like you have no context for this.

Like nobody, like, cause that's not in the story of Deuteronomy.

Like we, he dies and they just say that nobody knows where he's buried.

And that's really all we know.

And so his people should also be one, right? So we often talk about the Shema in this podcast, but today we want to look at a beautiful sentence that happens right before it.

So Deuteronomy 6, 4 says, And that's important because we see that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all commune together in perfect unity.

Okay.

Perfect unity.

If proof could be subsequently adduced that the bride had not preserved her maiden purity, the case was investigated, and if convicted, she was stoned to death before her father's house.

Deuteronomy 21:13-21.

A newly married man was exempt from military service and from any public business which might take him away from his home for the space of one year after his marriage, and a similar privilege was granted to a betrothed man.

The above usages of marriage among the Jews are mostly ascertained from the Bible, but the Talmudists specify three modes by which marriage might be effected, one being by a presentation of money in the presence of witnesses, accompanied by a mutual declaration of betrothal, another being by a written instead of a verbal contract, with or without money, and another being by mere consummation, which, although valid in law, was discouraged as being contrary to morality.
