Brian discusses the Celtics’ preseason so far, and why a fresh start after the Jaylen Brown drama could be a good thing for this team, before talking about how Drake Maye can get back into the MVP…
Jamie McClellanPanelistBefore we get to that, though, I wanna get into the Celtics a little bit here, because I don't know if you feel the same way as me.
It's been really fun to watch, whether it was the first preseason game, when it's sort of the young wings doing their thing, when Tatum and Paul George and Derrick White, all those guys didn't play, and you see Shireman and Ugo having outstanding games in the first preseason game.
Or like what we saw on Wednesday night, it's Tatum doing his thing, Derrick White doing his thing, Paul George sorta trying to fit in with this group, the big man rotation.
And it just would've been odd with Jaylen back now, that we watch where you're at and where this organization was going.
It worked with those two guys, Tatum and Jaylen in particular, at the highest level for a long time.
But because we got to this new CBA, in terms of the financial implications having both those guys, but also just where both these guys were at in terms of their careers.
So they could say during that stretch, like, "Yeah, we don't care whose team it is.
One of those, of course, they hoist the trophy at the end of the 2024 campaign.
But you could just tell, especially the way that Jaylen handled things last year, where he was the face of the franchise.
At this point, I'm sure Tatum wants his own team as well, as a guy that's been, before he got injured, he was first team all-NBA in four consecutive seasons.
But basically, these guys were playing together for the better part of a decade, and there's just something to be said about now, especially considering they both got the championship.
It's not like, hey, at this point, yeah, maybe if I'm Tatum, I do need Jaylen to try to get a championship.
If I'm Jaylen, yeah, best thing for me is playing with Tatum to get a championship.
So there was also something to pecking order, where if you look at the Knicks right now, whose team is it? It's clear it's Brunson's team.
