On this episode of the JT Sports Podcast, JT breaks down why Lane Kiffin’s offseason roster-building superpower could leave LSU vulnerable against Clemson in Week 1, and why Jeff Brohm and Louisville…
Without further ado, let's dive into some college football, shall we? The biggest superpower that Lane Kiffin has is that he's better than any other coach in America at being able to assemble a good team via the transfer portal.
Most coaches can assemble a competent team through the portal, but...
With what Lane Kiffin did at Ole Miss, you have the assumption that it's going to work at LSU, and I expect LSU to be a playoff team this year.
However, I don't think that Lane Kiffin's LSU tenure is going to get out to a storybook beginning because you have Clemson and Dabo Sweeney coming into Death Valley, and this is the first time in a very long time that Clemson's entering the regular season unranked and Dabo Sweeney has been leaning into that underdog card like he loves to do he says that Clemson has a bunch of nobodies we're just a bunch of nobodies so you got a bunch of nobodies coming to Death Valley looking to play spoiler to Lane Kiffin's LSU debut.
And I already told you guys, my bold prediction for week one is that Clemson is going to pull off the upset over LSU.
And a lot of you guys think I'm insane.
You think I'm on drugs.
But...
When you look at week one historically in college football, this tends to be the week where you see a large amount of upsets.
And sure, LSU is the more talented team than Clemson.
Alabama was more talented than Florida State, right? And Florida State kicked Alabama's ass week one last year.
In week one, the best teams don't always win because the best teams in week one aren't their best teams yet.
LSU is a talented team, but I think if Clemson had an opportunity to pick when they get to play LSU, either week one or week 10, 11, late November, they'd rather play LSU now than play them later because LSU...
With all of these new transfers coming in, I don't think that all of these guys are going to be able to come in and week one hit the ground running.
I don't think that the offensive line is going to have the best of communication.
I don't think that Sam Leavitt is going to come in hot with him missing all the spring practice with a Lisfranc injury.
I just don't see Lane Kiffin's debut getting out to this storybook beginning like how a lot of LSU fans think that it will because Clemson's perceived as falling off.
They no longer recruit at the level they used to.
They no longer develop at the level they used to.
You're right about all those things, but Clemson, is still talented enough that you can't just view them as a easy W.
Last year, Clemson kept it close with you, and you on paper were perceived to be the more talented team.
And even this year, sure, you have a lot more talent than Clemson, but the talent differential between LSU and Clemson is a lot smaller than what you may believe.
Clemson still had nine players drafted in the NFL draft a few months ago.
So that still shows that in spite of the drop-off in recruiting that's happening, they still are very good with their player evaluations, and they still are very good at player development.
And LSU comes into this game returning nearly 50% to 62%.
