This week we're discussing Nothingface, the fifth album by prog, experimental metal band Voivod. Nothingface was Voivod's major label debut and marked a departure from thrash metal to more avant garde…
Tool, Pantera, Soundgarden, Mastodon, Meshuggah, Dave Grohl, Mike Padden, famously Jason Newstead of Metallica who went on to play bass for them in the early 2000s, and even JG Thurwell of Fetus.
I've also worked with a guy called Jim Fetus who's heavily influenced by our material.
He decided to do a soundtrack concept outside his band, scraping Fetus off the wheel, and he asked me to get involved.
I like that he called him Jim Fetus because that's definitely not his name but you know might as well be his name they're one of the first metal bands to start implementing lots of prog rock elements and go into weird wackadoo crazy structures and i don't know the progressive thrash pioneers and this album kind of ushered in that new direction for them voivode is always on these lists of you know the most influential important metal bands in history and they really you do deserve it.
They really went out of their way to just push and keep pushing and have all these kind of weird concepts, concepts based on the art and the lyrical themes that are kind of consistent throughout the entire lengthy discography.
