Arriving after Trent Reznor's struggles with addiction and subsequent sobriety, Those experiences heavily influenced the writing.

Dave Grohl plays drums, percussion on seven tracks, giving portions of the record a much more organic, rhythmic feel than earlier Nine Inch Nails albums.

It was also the last Nine Inch Nails album recording at Nothing Studios in New Orleans before Reznor relocated to Los Angeles.

Uh, but there are times when like that is not, uh, if you're not playing grunge, you shouldn't be playing, um, at that kind of volume all the time, unless you're playing, you know, really heavy metal or, you know, something similar.

Uh, There's a way to play dynamically.

If you listen to Dave Grohl when they're playing their acoustic style, their acoustic set, it's amazing.

It's such a big difference, but that style of music that they played in the acoustic set is not the same style of playing for any of them that they would play during their normal live set.

And they inspired me.

And so I'm reading Dave Grohl's book.

I think it's called Storylines right now.

And if you haven't read the book, I highly recommend picking it up, especially if you're a Gen Xer like myself, if you loved the band Nirvana, if you like the Foo Fighters.

And by 1990, just three years after he joined the band, Kurt Cobain died.

And I said, holy shit, man, so much change for this guy's life in just three years.

And so today's episode is really about like, what can happen in a three-year period? And I started thinking, I'm in the shower and I'm thinking about how much change for Dave Grohl in his life in just a short period of time.

And obviously he's lived an extraordinary life.

It was the guy from the Foo Fighters.

Dave Grohl.

Yeah, he was working on a soundtrack that Dave Grohl came in and did something on and wound up writing with Dave Grohl in his car.

He's played at Red Rocks, opening for the Zac Brown Band, I think it was.

He's like, they hated us.

And not that Nirvana didn't, but we're talking about utilizing other things like pyrotechnics or like in the case of Motley Crue with Tommy Lee with the spinning drum kit that would rise in the air and spin around and everything like that.

Dave Grohl was not going to do that.

Dave Grohl would not do that now.

Kurt Cobain wasn't going to have pyrotechnics.

No, because the whole shtick is they don't care.
