And since this record came out, and it first came out in Europe on Dakar Records, and then it came out in America on MCA Records, a really big record company.
And I often wondered what a record executive sitting in a New York office thought the soldier's sash was.
What's the soldier's sash? What's this young guy who looks a bit punky, thinks he's in Echo and the Bunnymen wearing And he's got an acoustic guitar sitting in a Volkswagen Beetle.
Why has he started his debut album with a song called The Soldier's Sash? And it starts off with the lines, It was old, but it was beautiful.
The Sash is a Protestant marching song, like a really divisive song for one community in Northern Ireland.
So when I put them both together, the Soldier's Sash, I'm really having a go at both sides of the conflict which was happening at the time in Northern Ireland.
through two songs which meant a lot to each side i always thought the way down the middle for peace was the way we should be going the whole time i didn't like music which divided people and lined you up against this wall or that wall because in the end when you're getting lined up against the wall it's not very good and we were looking for a different way of being an alternative ulster as the punks had sung in the 70s Not this one, which is already provided, but an actual new way of being.
For us, who had grown up during the Troubles, that would have been a peaceful existence.
