“Rabbi Luria’s Kabbalist creation story, however baroque, accounts boldly for both moral evil and natural calamity,” Annie Dillard wrote in her 1999 book, *For the Time Being.* “The creator meant his…

What you just heard was a passage, a few passages, from Annie Dillard's 1999 book, For the Time Being, which we excerpted in the disaster issue of Lapham's Quarterly.

This episode, dedicated to her memory, is not the episode we'd planned to release today.

Until September 15, 2026, Annie Dillard was a cherished member of the Quarterly's editorial board, as well as a frequent contributor to its pages.

Louis Lapham had been her editor, her early champion, and for half a century, her friend.

In the 1980s, Dillard converted to Catholicism, but her pilgrimage did not end there in Catholicism.

The teacher in me says, the way to learn about a writer is to read the text or texts.

Following it, we this week compiled on the Lapham's quarterly substack passages from some of the texts that Dillard published in the quarterly over the years, including the passages from For the Time Being that you heard a minute ago.

In his New Yorker remembrance, Baird quotes from two letters written in August 1974 that that we published last week on the Lapham's quarterly website, in which Annie Dillard, recently returned from the Galapagos, corresponds with her assigning editor, Louis Lapham.

I quoted from both of those letters in the first episode of this podcast that I hosted, released on June 13, 2025.

We'll link to the letters in the show notes, and you'll be hearing them both today, in their entirety.

From Dillard, we'll hear remarks delivered at a celebration of the 150th anniversary of Harper's Magazine back in the year 2000.

From Lapham, we'll hear in its entirety the keynote address he delivered at Bard College's Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities in 2011.
