Yeah, it's funny because I did not have this realization until this morning, like the same way I'm like, okay, August Wilson, like all school kids across the nation know who he is.

I kind of assumed the same about Annie Dillard.

And it was only this morning talking to people not from Pittsburgh that they were like, who are you talking about? What are you talking about? And I realized that we had to read one of her books in school because I grew up in Pittsburgh, but it is not a universal experience.

Starting in the mid 1970s, Dillard completed a wide range of books from the poetry collection Tickets for a Prayer Wheel to what she would call the jolly journalism of encounters with Chinese writers to the novel of marriage called The May Trees.

Seven years later, President Barack Obama presented her with a National Humanities Medal.

Born Meta Ann Doak, she was born right here in Pittsburgh.

In her 1987 memoir, An American Childhood, she looked back at her early years and on her uniquely curious mind.
