She also teaches at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale.

And after working in theater for most of her life, Amanda Quaid began writing poetry in 2023 as a way to work creatively with illness.

Her debut collection, No Obvious Distress, is out now with John Murray Press and was named Memoir of the Month and one of the best books of 2025 by the British newspaper The Independent.

... which isn't as simple as cure.

Mm-hmm.

Um, you do some readings of some of these poems with medical students and in the Narrative Medicine program at Yale, and I know at other universities also.

What is it that you've discovered as you've read these poems to people who are training as medics?

Ottawa has described the alliance as strengthening sovereignty, but has not said whether a framework would be put to a vote.

Drew Fagan, a visiting professor at Yale University and professor at the Munk School of Global Affairs, argued that framing diversification as a choice between markets is mistaken, since Canada's appeal to foreign investors rests heavily on its proximity to the U.S. carny himself has acknowledged as much, using a late May speech at the Economic Club of New York to pitch deeper integration with the U.S. in aluminum, autos, and critical minerals.

Everybody at Yale gets an 80 or better.

Oh, yeah.

Right.

Yeah, that's got to be part of it.

If a

disproportionate number of people at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, fill in the blank, are getting 80s plus, I don't know.

Grade three math was the hardest 12 years of my life, but that doesn't sound right to me.

Marx, a lot of people don't realize how powerful an influence Marxism has been inside Christian churches.

But in fact, in the 1930s, a lot of leaders, professors from Yale and Harvard Divinity School, major figures in mainline Protestant denominations were going on pilgrimages to the Soviet Union.

getting shepherded around by Stalin's henchmen, shown all the beautiful factories and the dams they were building and all the progress they were making.

And they came back to America saying that the Soviet Union was the kingdom of heaven being built on earth by human hands.

They have no college, no university founded on this grant and supported by its income of any special note.

It was hence reserved to Michigan by means of like character and no more abundant to rear up within 38 years from its inception and the location of its site an institution rivaling Yale and Harvard, but outstripping them both.

This is now universally acknowledged.

The New York Observer says that the University of Michigan is a marvel.

Wishing to prepare myself for the contest that I was aware must come, and did come in earnest, I addressed in the summer of 1837 a circular letter to a number of gentlemen in the world of letters proposing this question.

Quote, Shall we, in the commencement of our career as a state, grant to an indefinite number of private associations the right of conferring degrees, or for the present concentrate our energies in one university? End quote.

I received answers from such men as Dr. Wayland, President of Brown University, President Humphrey of Amherst College, President Day of Yale, Governor Everett of Massachusetts, and Bishop McIlvaine of Ohio, all deploring the multiplication of institutions under the imposing name of universities and colleges as unfavorable to sound learning, and advising, if possible, the plan of concentrating our energies on one university.

President McGuffey made this striking and explicit declaration.

Remember the This Is Your Brain on Drugs ad from the 80s, depicted by an egg dropped on a sizzling frying pan? We've come a long way in our public understanding about drug use and addiction in the brain.

But more recently, Yale psychiatrist James Kimmel Jr. argues that your brain on revenge looks a lot like your brain on drugs.

Kimmel's research finds that revenge is addictive and that committing a vengeful action leads to a dopamine hit that makes future similar actions more likely.

Well, I've been an academic most of my life.

I've had research or teaching positions at Stanford, University of Chicago, the Wharton Business School, UCLA, Yale.

I was chief economist for the United States Sentencing Commission in Washington.

And then more recently, I was the senior advisor for research and statistics in the Department of Justice.

In November 98, Mayor Daley called up the president of the University of Chicago, went through 45 minutes of all the wonderful things that the city wanted to do with the university.
