Phil Simms Joins Bleav in Chargers to Discuss Herbert, Harbaugh, and More

I just want to jump right into it, Phil, if you don't mind.

Just because, you know, your career starts one way and then all of a sudden you just kind of... take off how much of that was an OC a quarterback coach you figuring out because obviously I'm going to segue into it to where Mike McDaniel fits into all this with Justin Herbert and just kind of how important those circumstances and people around you are to the quarterback position

Well, trying to put that back to when I played is you just can't do it.

The quarterback position has changed dramatically.

Pro football has changed dramatically since I played.

We did it, it was a running back was the star.

I was starting to creep in with the Dan Marino and John Elway, but even then it still wasn't like it is now.

Every game, win or lose, well, our quarterback stinks.

And that kind of thing.

Oh, yeah, well, whatever.

And also, too, the game was a lot simpler.

The game is sideline to sideline.

Now we have more formations, more movement, more little trick plays, whatever.

I mean, come on.

I watch college football and pro football.

If you don't throw at least six completions on screen passes, then you're falling behind what's going on.

I mean, college football is unbelievable.

They throw a screen pass every other play, it seems like, for many reasons.

One, they can't design something to get it down the field.

They don't coach it well enough.

And maybe they don't have faith in the quarterback.

But those are just a few of my pet peeves.

Yeah, the old bubble screen.

I remember when Lane showed up at USC, we started calling it bubble screen you, man.

Oh, really? Okay.
