Luke 2:1-20 | One Story

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

There are three people mentioned in this first sentence.

This is the book of the Genesis of Jesus Christ.

This is how Jesus Christ got here, you might say.

Jesus the Messiah is the focus of this book.

Then he mentions David.

David.

that he is the son of David.

This puts the focus on the nation of Israel and points out that Jesus is the son of David.

To clue us in, first thing, that Jesus is a rightful heir to the throne of David.

and the fact that God promised David an heir to his throne forever.

In 2 Samuel, it says, and your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.

Your throne will be established forever.

Matthew wants to talk to us about the kingdom of heaven And the message begins with David and there's a repeated emphasis on David so that we understand that the rightful king is now here and the kingdom has come.

And then the third person mentioned in the first sentence is Abraham.

Abraham was a Gentile and God's promise to him was to bless Abraham.

Every nation.

Matthew starts with a reference to Abraham and ends his book, ends his story about Jesus with a great commission that points us again to all the nations.

In other words, God's intent is to bless the world through this person, Jesus the Christ.

That's the promise that God made Abraham in Genesis 12.

He said, I will make a great nation of you and I will bless you and make your name great so you'll be a blessing.

I will bless those who bless you and him who dishonors you I will curse.

And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

Talking about Abraham reminds us of his promise.

son Isaac.
