David

He's the most famous king in the Old Testament.

His name is David.

And he did something that was awful for any king or any person to do.

It was that time of year when soldiers would go off to war, but he stayed behind even though he usually would go.

And so he manipulated his kingly power to bring her to himself.

And then he cheated on his wife with this woman.

And this woman cheated on her husband with King David.

If that wasn't bad enough, she conceived and was pregnant.

So there's a whole section where the question is, what texts mentioned in Holy Scripture are no longer extant? And then there's a whole list, right? The Sefer HaYashar, the so-called Book of Dasher, the many Proverbs of Solomon.

There's a section on how David wrote a lot more things than we have.

So this was just kind of a piece of pop culture.

I don't think it shocked people.

This is going to be, yes, connected in interesting ways to this text, but I'm going to be, it's going to be a kind of reference work, but a whimsical reference work with illustrations about all these books that we, that's something like the Hypomesticon, that Christian Bible trivia text.

Okay.

King David was on the roof of his palace at the time that kings go forth to battle.

So he was trying to look productive and he wasn't actually doing anything.

He looked down into an area where a woman believed that she would have had privacy and saw something that he was not meant to see.

So King David also felt that he had some kind of like authority control ownership over women's body in private spaces.

Okay.

Number three, King David demanded that that woman be brought to him, so he felt that he could just choose women, just like... getting something out of a claw machine or something.

You know, I just want that one.

He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High.

And the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end.

No first century Israelite would have missed the meaning here.

This child shall be the fulfillment of the promise made to King David.

And this means that the child is in fact the king of the world, the one who would bring unity and peace to all the nations.

The conviction grew upon Israel that this mysterious descendant of David would be king not just for a time and not just in an earthly sense, but forever and for all nations.

This definitive king of the Jews would be king of the world.

He would be our king as well.

I have been, well, we've been teaching about 2 Samuel.

So right now I'm about to teach on David when Absalom, well, he had major relational instability.

Absalom, his son, has betrayed him.

His counselors, he's just on the run.

It is like really crazy.

And what I love is this psalm.

that David is writing.

There's Psalm 3 that he writes at that moment, but there's another Psalm 55, Psalm 55, about casting your burden.

He'll bring them from the most surprising locations.

You know, David in the...

Shepard's Field or the Apostle Paul, a legalist.

He'll bring them from the oddest places, and yet they'll have a powerful place in God's plan.

part of the test was, could you learn to completely depend on me during this season? Can you learn to completely depend on me? And that's what Elijah needed.

I think there's a common thread in the lives of people that God uses in a real mighty way is that there is a time in which they are left just them and God.

David, after anointed, went back to care for sheep.

Saul, when he became Paul, soon thereafter went to Arabia.
