Philip Lassiter: Prince, Paisley Park, Funk & Finding His Own Sound

We were talking before we started this up about the new record.

We're going to talk about your history and your last release as well, but you're in the midst of getting ready for another release pretty soon, right? Absolutely.

My eighth album.

And

when's the single going to drop officially? So Shoes is dropping on October the 2nd on Vocal Records.

It's like a neo-soul pop R&B song.

little bit of a different sound for me for sure and it's got my classic trumpet stacks and some great musicians you know from Tony Tony Tony Brian Collier on drums the great Jon Snow on guitar Josephine Marie doing vocal stacks and yeah it's a it's a cool song I'm excited to bring it out and it'll be the first single for the for the new album

And the new album, you said Shoes, right?

Shoes is the name of the song.

The album is yet to have a title.

I'm still kind of kicking ideas around.

But the idea is I'm leaning towards something like Reimagined because this album is very different.

It's still got a lot of the classic elements that my fans would expect.

But I'm also really experimenting with some more commercial sounds and kind of genre hopping around within that as well.

Even the funky stuff, like half the record is funk, soul, with lots of horns.

But even within that, it's a bit more focused.

And, you know, three and a half minute songs, four minute songs, not a lot of improvisation, just like kind of straight to the point and trying to reach, perhaps reach a broader audience.

So you mentioned members from Tony, Tony, Tony and different players.

Are they recording coming out to you or are you doing it trading tracks back and forth?

When I'm working with musicians that are located in other places, we just do it remotely.

They record at their place or they have a studio.

But I'm still doing quite a bit of live recording here in the Netherlands with my band and even remote recording with members of my band here.

In fact, we have a session coming up on Monday.

We're going in with a 14-piece band to the biggest studio in the Netherlands to record what will be the final track on the record.

And I'm really stoked.
