Jason PackGuestPolice say a greater tragedy was stopped by an armed member of the community, a hero, who ran toward the gunfire and killed the shooter mid-rampage, leaving the immediate question, how many more kids would have died if he hadn't? That hero asked police not to name him.
He is a father of two children, two girls, at that Silver Rail Elementary School, and he happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Police say he saw the teenage gunman shoot at the driver of a pickup truck before breaking into the school through the front doors and then chased after him.
The 36-year-old man who parked at the school took out a .40 caliber pistol that was legally secured in his vehicle and carried it towards the school.
As he made entry through the forced open doors, he heard shooting and saw a teacher involved in a physical altercation with the suspect.
He then went to the classroom where the struggle was underway and fired his weapon, striking the suspect multiple times.
It's a terrible thing, but thank goodness for a man that had a gun and knew how to use it.
Police say the 16 year old gunman was armed with a 12 gauge pump action shotgun.
He used it to blast his way through the school's doors before murdering four innocent souls.
He also critically wounded a seven year old child and another teacher, all in that same one classroom.
We will identify the suspect in this case one time.
I will not say his name again.
The suspect has been identified as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II.
He previously attended Silver Rail Elementary, and we believe he traveled to the school on foot, although that route remains under current investigation.
He is not currently enrolled at Ben Lapine Schools.
