Mick Mulvaney, his former chief of staff, has come out and said it's impossible.

Then you hear J.D. Vance.

I mean, how do you vote for J.D. Vance? He's just going to bold-faced lie.

I started off at the CFPB working for Elizabeth Warren.

Towards the end of my career, I was working for Mick Mulvaney.

They're not the same person.

And that was a, what we called a whiplash, that was a large shift.

But at that time, at least, Mick Mulvaney, to his credit, was of the view that his job, although he had opposed the creation of the CFPB in the executive branch, his job was to carry out the laws that Congress had established entrusted to the CFP.

He was very clear not to do more than the Congress had authorized to do, as he saw it.

It was a very different bureau, but there was a certain measure of continuity, both in personnel and in policies.

But you do see in other financial regulators that the positions that we're talking about do tend to be held by career staff.

So the question now becomes, because Donald Trump is gonna have to carry a lot of the, uh, campaigning, uh, in the midterms, has he changed? Has the president changed his outlook, uh, physically, mentally, emotionally from his first term to his second term? So I thought a guy, uh, would be interesting to talk to who was w- at the president's side for almost a year and a half.

And after that, my main dealings were with the Chief of Staff, Mick, and then Mark Meadows, who took over from him as Chief of Staff.

Um, I wanna go back in time to when I was a reporter covering Congress from, like, 2011 to 2013, and it was right after the big Tea Party wave that saw all of these fiscally conservative Republicans elected to Congress.

And they came in, and they were like, "We need to bring fiscal sanity to America." And one of them was Mick Mulvaney from South Carolina, and he went on to be President Trump's budget director and chief of staff.

But I remember going to his district and watching him do a town hall where he did this lengthy slide presentation all about the debt and the deficit and the drivers of it.

Scott, uh, you and I covered a series of fights over government spending in those years.

We're growing, we're growing our debt three times faster than our, than our economy, and that's not a recipe for success.

Yeah.

So, uh, I called Mick Mulvaney.

He comes to mind whenever the debt and deficit come up because I, you know, I, probably because I spent quality time watching him, uh, give his b- his, uh, slide presentation.
