Ranma’s ‘time travel’ premise and filler context1:52 – 4:11

1:52

The most important part of Ranma, the thing that I always think about when I'm like, "What makes Ranma ½ the series that it is? What's the core of this franchise?" And the answer, of course, is time travel.

2:07

Who doesn't think of time travel when it comes to, to martial arts stories like Ranma?

2:12

Yeah, every, e- ever since, uh, Scruffy the janitor has been brought up, um, it, it's just...

2:18

It is the, uh, crux of, um, the, the show.

2:22

It's, uh, you have to, uh, put a little bit of ti- time travel here and there.

2:25

So yeah, there we go.

2:27

Yeah.

2:27

I, I, I, I just love [laughs] being able to say, "The time travel episodes," because I don't know how people will react when they find out about it.

2:39

I've never told someone and heard their response, but I'm just like, "Okay, first of all, it's time travel, but also I said episodes, plural.

2:51

There's somehow more than one Ranma ½ episode about time travel," and I hope that gets people excited.

2:59

I definitely am excited.

3:00

Uh, after watching the episodes, I, I wonder how did, uh, um, Takahashi came up with, "You know what? This martial arts bit, we could throw some time travel.

3:11

We could throw some Terminator 2 into it, you know?" It's, um, yeah, v- very much of a surprise.

3:16

Well, all three of the, of the episodes, there's three of them, they're all filler, and Rumiko Takahashi wasn't involved in any of them as far as I, I, I'm aware.

3:27

Although one of them is, is only technically filler.

3:31

There's a bit of a weirdness there.

3:34

Uh, although the, the parts involving time travel, that's not from Rumiko.

3:38

That's not from anything in the manga, unfortunately.

3:41

But boy is it, is it just...

3:44

I...

3:44

Th- this is basically a grab bag episode.

3:47

I like to group episodes into similar themes and, and I, I had a couple set up for whenever people were like, "I'll talk about whatever," I'm like, "How about this?" And I was just so excited when I was able to write down the concept of time travel, you know? Do you want to watch some episodes? Let's watch the time travel episodes.

4:09

And that's what we got today.

4:11

[laughs]
