**Episode 483: BOB DOLE 1995 – Clinton’s Comeback (Part 24)**
**The Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin – November 4, 1995**
On November 4, 1995, one of the most shocking political assassinations of the modern era took place in Tel Aviv.
Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin had just addressed thousands of Israelis gathered at a peace rally supporting the Oslo peace process. Within minutes, he would be shot three times by Yigal Amir, a Jewish Israeli extremist who opposed Rabin's negotiations with the Palestinians. Rabin was rushed to the hospital, but his wounds proved fatal.
In this episode of *BOB DOLE 1995 – Clinton’s Comeback*, we step away from the American political campaign for a moment to examine the extraordinary events unfolding in the Middle East during the autumn of 1995.
Just two years earlier, Rabin had stood alongside President Bill Clinton and PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat on the White House lawn as the Oslo Accords were signed. For a brief moment, there was hope that decades of conflict between Israelis and Palestinians might finally give way to a lasting peace.
But by 1995, that hope was under enormous strain. Israel was deeply divided over the peace process. Palestinian terrorism was threatening the negotiations, while Jewish extremists inside Israel increasingly portrayed Rabin as betraying his country. Across the Arab world, governments and political movements were reacting to the changing relationship between Israel and the Palestinians.
Then came November 4.
We examine Rabin's extraordinary life—from soldier and military commander to Israeli prime minister and Nobel Peace Prize recipient—and the political circumstances that led to his assassination. We also look at the reaction in Israel, the United States, and around the world, including President Clinton's deeply personal response to the death of a man with whom he had worked closely in pursuit of peace.
And while the assassination occurred thousands of miles from Washington, it was very much part of the world Bill Clinton was navigating as he prepared for the 1996 presidential election. With Bob Dole emerging as the Republican nominee-in-waiting and Clinton fighting his way back politically after the Republican Revolution of 1994, the events of November 1995 were shaping a rapidly changing world.
The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin would change Israel, alter the course of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and become one of the defining moments of the 1990s.
This is the story of Yitzhak Rabin, the political battle surrounding the Oslo peace process, and the tragic night that changed the Middle East.
