We began with analyzing why sectarianism has mass appeal, even though logically, rationally, it shouldn't make any sense.
If you disagree with somebody ten percent and you agree ninety percent, why does that ten percent become so big? We talked about the psychological, the sociological, the anthropological, the cultural realities that we should all be cognizant of so that insha'Allah we don't fall prey to crass sectarianism.
Uh, we also mentioned the hadith of the, the, the seventy-three sects and how to understand it, how various scholars have understood it.
And whichever one you follow, as long as you avoid dogmatism and, and narrow-minded, uh, fundamentalism, insha'Allah, whichever other interpretation you follow, you know, there's ways to understand this hadith that still reinforce the unity of the ummah.
Today and next class, I will give you some guidelines about how to proceed in life in light of all of these differences of opinion.
Because in the end of the day, and I genuinely empathize with you, wallahi, I empathize with you, you are struggling as it is to practice Islam in some nominal fashion.
And all of a sudden, you're bombarded with not just the problems of practicing Islam, but what version of Islam? What is the correct understanding? And if you do a simple Google search, rather than be reinforced in one, you will actually be exposed to a myriad of interpretations, which will actually exacerbate the problem in your life.
And every time you read one website or you log on to one YouTube video from one strand, you might feel very influenced.
Then the minute you listen to somebody else, you're like a ping pong ball just going back and forth.
It is truly difficult times we live in because a simple search can reveal the most profound arguments of all sides.
And when you're not a specialist, that's gonna be my point number one, when you're not a specialist, to navigate specialist controversies is well nigh impossible.
And that's what today and next class is about, some basic preliminary guidelines.
You cannot blindly follow, because even if you were to, then which scholar are you gonna blindly follow? Which group? Which firqa? Which strand? You cannot blindly follow.
So how then do you begin this complicated navigation? Let us begin with a number of principles today, and we'll continue next Tuesday.
