The word demonization comes from the Christian church that would take local gods, like the gods of nature or whatever, and literally demonize them, put horns on them if they didn't have them, and turn them into devils and say, "They're bad, we're good." Demonization has two really, really powerful belonging effects.

One is by demonizing the other, you define yourself.
