We had a seminary prop who said, every time you come across a text that has any kind of command, it ends up going like this.

In fact, it turns out when Paul says something to you like, love your wives as Christ loved the church, what he meant was not, you don't love your wives as Christ loves the church, so Jesus died for you.

And so we do have this tendency in Lutheran circles to not allow the text to speak for itself, but the text just kind of serves as a platform for launching into some kind of law gospel dialectic.

in the last, the 20th century is just notorious for this kind of thing in Lutheran circles.

Uh, there was a book called preaching for the church by a guy named Richard camera.

And Richard camera has this, um, diagnostic for every sermon you go into, which actually I actually do think is somewhat helpful when used properly.

He says every sermon should have a goal, there's a malady you need to address, and there's a means of dealing with the malady.

The problem is those diagnostic questions ultimately just served as a sermon structure for everything.
