The Transportation Department says 36,000 people were killed on American roads in 2025, which is a lot.
The fatality rate, deaths per 100,000, 100 million miles driven, fell to 1.1. That's according to the Detroit News here, who say that's the second lowest rate in over 100 years of records, behind only 2014.
Now, drivers actually drove more miles in 2025 than the year before, but fewer people died, so that made the stat look even better, even though 36,000 is still a lot.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's administrator credits stepped-up enforcement and a federal crackdown on what the agency calls unqualified foreign truck drivers.
The announcement came at the start of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
