Women's Bible Study: Psalm 109- A Prayer of Vengeance

All right, ladies, we're going to get into Psalm 109 this morning.

I do want to open up with some introductory points about this.

And so I was looking at this in my Bible dictionary.

And then in the Moody commentary, there was a statement regarding Psalm 109 I thought was interesting.

poetic, and also really good to kind of help hone us in.

Good morning, Mildred.

Hone us in on what's going on.

Yes, we're so glad, Joanne, that you're here.

I'm so glad, so thankful that you're able to be here with us today, and all you ladies.

And I do have some ladies that have emailed that are interested in joining us in our Bible study, so I'm very thankful to hear that as well, that there are ladies that are wanting to get into God's Word more, and hopefully this will be a help to them.

Psalm 109.

Psalm 109 is a Psalm of David, and we're going to see that this morning as we read it.

I hope that you have your Bibles, and if you take notes, feel free to take notes so that you can go back over this later on and look at some of the things that we share in this Bible study together and learn about it.

So, imprecatory prayers.

Hey, Kathy.

Some may not know what imprecatory means.

And so I wanted to share this with you today before we look at Psalm 109 so you can get a better understanding of what this is.

Because some people, and Susan notes this in the study guide, some people may take issue with this type of prayer.

Good morning, Lisa.

And what the definition of it and what David did, and then thinking, is this sinful? Is this wrong? What's going on here? But if we understand it and from what David did and understand it in the proper context, then it will make more sense to us.

And then we as New Testament believers, now we can understand how we are to pray and what this actually means.

So imprecation or imprecatory prayers are to imprecate.

It means to pray evil against or to invoke disaster upon.

Now, some of us, for one thing, it does sound like it's unloving.

And then other people, it may be, for lack of a better word, it may be a triggering thing.
