LexG back with a longform review of the horror smash Obsession, then a look at Adam Scott in Hokum, Guy Ritchie's In the Grey, Renny Harlin's shark flick Deep Water, and Lee Cronin's take on The…
But, uh, mostly I wanted to talk about Obsession, the big horror hit that's a word-of-mouth sensation.
And here with the lead performance by this actress, who's terrific in the movie, and she's under the spell of this wish willow-- one willow wish stick or whatever it's c- one wish willow.
It's like, I was trying to review this earlier, and I was just going on and on about the premise, and sometimes it gets-- I get bogged down with that and don't wanna tell you plot points and all that.
And then there's Nikki, who's the object of his desires, and his more platonic friend, Sarah.
And I had a lot of questions about, like, how do you get Andy Richter to be in your movie when you're making it for cheap, and you're kind of new to Hollywood, and you're a YouTuber from wherever this guy's from? And, like, how does that work out? And questions like, [chuckles] how do they have homes and stuff? Like, two of these four have houses, and one seems to live in a frat house, or he's having a frat party of sorts.
But also, one of them's applying to schools, and I'm like, are they 18? Are they 23? Are they 30? Uh, why-- how do you have a house when you work, you know, an $18,000-a-year job? Directors, I think, a lot of times don't-- You know, it's just I'm beaten down by living in LA, where a house is, like, $750,000 for the worst house in the worst neighborhood.
And you see this and the Nikki girl, and she's like, "Drop me off here." And I'm like, well, surely she lives with her dad or something 'cause they reference her dad.
And they're like, "No, her dad is in another state." I'm like, well, how is she a homeowner? So instead of the, you know, pertinent themes of this movie about agency, control, gender dynamics, uh, you know, whether this guy's an incel or not, I was just like, how do they have a house? How are they-- How, how's he paying the property taxes on the grandma's house that he inherited? Anyway, the lead in this movie is played by Michael Johnston, who I think is very good in it.
The younger generation loves to tout, uh, you know, their, their familiarity with Possession and Isabella Johnny in that.
And I think what really helps here is the actress, and I believe her name is-- I mean, I wanna get this pronunciation, pronunciation right.
