Jess MaddoxHostIf America no longer feels able to keep its bombers at RAF Fairford, what does that say about our ability to secure Britain's military bases against modern threats?
Talk of a security alert at the base, talk of involvement by Iran, quite possibly.
We've also had just tonight two Latvian men have been arrested for allegedly breaking into RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire.
And then we also have... a Royal Navy sailor in court allegedly for spying, possibly for Russia.

We've seen that in the war in Ukraine and Russia, creeping into Europe, getting closer to our borders.

But we also know we face different threats, whether that is cyber war, which is a big part of the ongoing global instability.

So there is a big challenge for us as a country to ensure that we defend ourselves from those threats.

the biggest upgrade in defence spending since the Cold War, and we've got more to do, and we'll be setting out plans in the next few months as to how we can make sure that we are paying our way, that we're investing in our defence as we should be.

But I think a really important part of that conversation is what that spending is going to be on.

because it need not just be on military equipment, it needs to be on issues such as cybersecurity and indeed our intelligence services, because the nature of warfare, the nature of geopolitics is changing all the time.

So over the next few months, the government will be setting out their plans, not just on defence spending, but ensuring that we spend it not for the battles of the past, but the battles that we face in the future.

Well, look, I mean, there was a very serious incident that happened just two weeks ago on a Sunday morning.

I was meant to be with the Prime Minister that morning playing football and I know that he wasn't there because he was dealing with that very serious incident.

Obviously, Fiona, you wouldn't expect me to talk about ongoing security issues at RAF Fairford or indeed any other military base...

But I think it's right, and you're right to raise it, that there is lots of incidents that we have seen.
