Chopin, Andy, Paddy and Lee give their thoughts on the latest Prince Estate release Timeless, questioning the choices, debating the music and asking whether the Estate is delivering what Prince fans…
Uh, before we start on a track by track, the concept of this album that was announced was 10 tracks, nine studio, one live, spanning Prince's entire career, so ev- every decade represented, so '70s, '80s, '90s, 2000s, and 2010.
So what did everybody think of this as a concept? Anyone wanna go first?
I'll jump in.
I think it's a terrible concept.
[laughs] I think it's a terrible, terrible concept to do Prince's career in 10 tracks.
We haven't even got an analogy for it.
It's like may- maybe going to, like, a tasting restaurant, you know, but they just give you a grain of rice as one, a- a- a- as one dish, right? And then a look at a lentil as another, right? And then just, like, o- one of the other dishes is you just s- someone puts a, a glass of orange juice near you.
What is this?
[laughs]
This is not-
And I'll back Andy
...
this is not ...
I'm not gonna, right? This is a weird release, right? It's, I know it was gonna be called Decades at one point.
If something's called, is called Decades or if you wanna do a concept like this, give us five discs then, and do like-
That's exactly what I was thinking
... do, do something proper.
This is, this is one of the deepest catalogs in popular music, and this is a very ...
The, the concept isn't bad on paper.
The execution is bizarre.
It is.
It's not without its highlights, but it, it, it kind of like a taste of what it could've been, like a, a, a '70s disc this year, an '80s disc next year, a '90s disc after that, and a 2000, 2010.
This could've been a five-year project, an album a year, a CD a year, and I think people would've been really kind of excited about that idea.
You get to live in each decade and not base it around an album release.
I think that would've been a really good concept.
