So then Greg Boyer, whom we've had on the show, you know, just to clarify, he had put horns on the song months before the release of Timeless.

on Calabama, right?

But it can't necessarily be old people talking to young people.

That conversation arrives with Timeless, since trombonist Greg Boyer confirmed in a Facebook post when he was asked earlier this year to provide new instrumentation on the compilation's track, Calabama, a party jam originally recorded in 2003.

The horns don't call attention to themselves, not the way the thudding metallic guitar attitude tick-tick-bang does.

I compared the timeless tick-tick with an old bootleg I've had kicking around, and there's no mistaking that the official version is larded with cartoonish distortion that distracts from the nervy kick of the 81 original.

and and there's you and greg boyer um and you guys are just just soloing what was what were those gigs like for you

well that the the original thing was i hadn't seen prince in six six and a half years you know we we had kind of gone a separate way around 96 or something around there and i you know i was off doing what night i do and he was off doing his thing and it was like And then I was playing a Latin jazz band in Minneapolis, the Stokewood Williams playing drums.

So... we're lucky to actually be able to have this volume of new material that is, uh, that is there.

Um, but then today, or actually yesterday, um, there was, there was some people that a bunch of people that had found, um, bunch of people that had been following greg boyer trombonist greg boyer who worked with prince for many many years and um greg indicated that he had just got like recently had recorded trombone parts for calabama which is one of the tracks on timeless and um that was kind of a little bit of a surprise because that song was recorded in 2003, but come to find out when he was asked further about it, it was, uh, divulged that they said, so you're saying that the horn tracks that you did were done posthumously and then added to Calabama and Greg Boyer just simply answered.

Yes.

Um, Of course that caused all kinds of kerfuffle.

And Greg Boyer replied, the producer asked if I'd add some horns to it to spice it up, to spice up the keyboard horns.

Obviously, I said yes.

That's kinda like when you, when you have it, you have it, you know? But, uh, yeah, to, to actually, uh, w- when s- like, I think Greg Boyer, the tromp- trombone player with us now, he has perfect pitch and, and some of the, uh, the horn players, you know, then I'll- I'll ask them out of nowhere, you know, um, like would notice that like sometimes when you hear like, like the, uh, the trucks backing up and they had a beep, beep, beep, beep, and then if, if I'm tuning my, my guitar or something, I'll say like, "Oh, what's, what note is that?" And then I'll try to find it.

And one time it was backing up, and it happened to be the same, same key as, uh, We Want the Funk.
