**Four straight SEC Championships. A National Championship. Team captain. And then an entirely different chapter as an artist.** James Bates joins **PodNumbra** to tell the story of his remarkable…
And another thing I want to talk to you about, I personally credit you for making Steve Spurrier impersonations a thing.
I think you did it first, you did it best.
There's certainly been other people that have come along the way and tried to do it, but I think you perfected it over the years and What was it like being in practice day in, day out with Coach, observing him and obviously modeling your impersonation after his characteristics and just his voice and his persona is such a rich and fantastic thing that Steve Spurrier is a part of college football because I think he's one of the best and one of the most iconic names ever.
But tell me about when you first started impersonating him and did you ever do it to his face and what was his response in that regard?
Yeah, as defensive players, we weren't around him as much as you'd think, like on the day to day, it was us on the defensive side.
And unless we had a bad game, which fortunately we didn't have very many, he kind of just let us do our thing.
He'd start getting kind of antsy when we didn't have a three and out because he just wants to call his ball plays.
And so we didn't, we didn't deal with him all the time, but man, when we did, it was, it was always a treat.
One of my favorites is from Stoops himself, the whole, you think those Tennessee coaches are out floating in the ocean right now that, you know, and are from Shoddy, Brian Schottenheimer, who's now the head coach of the Cowboys.
But it's funny you ask if I ever did the stories in front of him, because for the longest time I didn't.
And, you know, you can only imagine I'd go on a, well, back then it wasn't really a podcast, but you go to a gator club, you know, the, the touchdown club or this touchdown club up in Savannah or, you know, all these gator clubs I used to go speak at.
And it's almost like a, like a head ball coach Tourette's, you know, it's like, oh, I just triggered like, oh, that reminds me of this other story that you're like, all right, My man.
