Following the news of the 2026 Christmas Special being cancelled and Doctor Who parting ways with RTD, David & Matt sit down to discuss their immediate thoughts. Doctor Who theme by Ron Grainer…
So today, this afternoon, doctorwho.tv, the official BBC-run website for all things Doctor Who, uh, published a press release entitled An Update on the Future of Doctor Who.
As part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations, and in line with the BBC's charter and agreement requirements, the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year." So I'm just gonna stop it there after that, that sentence.
Uh, I take it, Matt, you're familiar with what's, uh, what's meant by competitive tender-
Yeah
...
in this context?
Absolutely.
So people are going to bid on the right to produce the show.
Yeah, effectively.
Um, this, this could mean, uh, the BBC no longer doing it even partly as an in-house production.
Um, which I think ...
I mean, I guess that wasn't the case with Bad Wolf, was it? It, it technically, Bad Wolf were fully owning the production.
Mm-hmm.
I think it was, it was more Bad Wolf with additional money from Disney.
So this is not necessarily a new development, but, you know, this, this is the future of Doctor Who, I think.
It, it's just going to be passed around from production company to production company every few years.
Um, and yeah, w- we'll just have to see how that affects it in the long term.
But, um, yeah, I think some people were thinking maybe does the BBC bring it back and just do it on a cheaper, on, on, on a sort of stripped back budget, make it an in-house production.
You know, they had a go doing it as a, as an outside production, and, and, and that didn't quite pan, pan out the way they wanted, so they pull it back.
No, does not seem to be the plan.
And, of course, if they're only starting this process now, that means we're, we're, we're not getting any Doctor Who next year.
