Protect College Sports Act could accelerate massive realignment—will UConn finally secure its seat at the power conference table? Matt Schonvisky explores how North Carolina’s backing and rising…
So the Protect College Sports Act is clearly, there's a lot of conversation going on around the bill, around the process, around what it's going to do for athletics at the college level going forward.
Because it seems, based on news out there, that things are pushing forward to a point where it's getting to a point where there's conversations happening, objections happening across the Big Ten and the SEC about what exactly the government's model will be and what the reaction is going to be if there's support or not support by the SEC or the Big Ten.
the Protect College Supports Act, the PCSA, could be put forward for a vote as soon as the end of this month in Congress.
Which means we need to keep a very, very, very close eye on this bill between now and the end of the month before Congress goes away on their summer recess in the month of August.
Because if this thing gets put forward, if this thing starts moving towards a vote, I think you...
But if this does pass and the legislative language in the bill basically mandates a freeze across all of the prominent college sports conferences, I think you're going to see movement.
It's clear there is conversations happening among prominent schools within the ACC.
But when you start seeing the most respected reporters and the most trusted reporters that are very, very highly connected, talking about North Carolina, we're going to talk about North Carolina and the impact here in a sec because there's some news that came out over the weekend about North Carolina, the state of North Carolina, and what they're doing in support of the PCSA.
But the fact that you have prominent sources and prominent reporters that have connections to the top of each of these major conferences, to the top of college athletics, talking about expansion again, and the rumored candidates again, signals to me this thing is a lot further along down the tracks than anybody imagines.
And if this act, the PCSA, gets to a vote, just the mere signal that there's going to be a vote, I think you're going to be seeing a lot of public conversation about who's going where in a very, very short time frame.
And whether that's immediately, I don't think it will be, unless schools have opportunities to move immediately.
