The critics on Rotten Tomatoes, 90% of them gave it a positive rating and 90% of the fans gave it a positive rating.

That's a rare example where the fans and the critics are right together.

They agree completely.

We often see big differences in those.

On IMDb, it got an average of 7.8, which is really good.

It's close to that barrier, the 8.0 barrier that I always talk about.

So, the director is Edward, or Edvard, I suppose he's German, Edward Berger.

Screenplay story written by Edward Berger, Leslie Patterson, and Ian Stoeckel.

I may not be a linguistic genius, but I'm pretty darn sure that Leslie Patterson and Ian Stoeckel are not German names.

So without having studied this, I am guessing that this is not a purely German film.

yeah it is based on the novel of the same name by eric maria remark but i'm gonna just go ahead and say it now and we'll keep saying this it is very loosely based on the novel whereas it's hard you know sean i part of me wanted to say hey let's just review this film in its own right and just pretend there was no book there was no other movies but i i just can't do that it's impossible Especially because the book and the first movie were such groundbreaking art forms.

So I think we're going to have to occasionally refer back to those.

So the 1930 film and the 1979 made-for-TV American film were very closely based on the book.
