What gives life meaning when the answers aren’t easy? In this episode of Investigating Ikigai, Rev Joe Taylor speaks with Jane Codrington, pastor and founder of We Are Church, an inclusive Christian…
So maybe we can let our reflection on Rebecca's wonderful life shift us to the now and the work that you are doing, the way you are living out your purpose, because I think it has come through so clearly in your sharing that deep desire, that deep passion for change.
Where have you seen that incredible God's kingdom coming to people who have previously been excluded, marginalized? What does that look like in your spaces?
There are many people in our community who I think would testify to being safe, seen and celebrated for the first time.
We had a wedding take place at We Are Church a couple of years ago between two women.
who were both previously married to men and they had a very special connection as teenage girls, both raised in spaces where they didn't even know what the word gay was or lesbian and married, had kids and divorced and yeah, made contact in their forties and met for coffee and discovered in fact that they actually were in love back then.
And yeah, I reconnected and got married and they are active in the church space and leading worship and doing all sorts.
And they both, they just love God and they just function in the church so easily.
There are people who, who come to We Are Church regularly from a shelter here in Johannesburg.
There was a time a few weeks back where I asked them not to come because of the 30th of June stress around foreigners.
And I said to them, you know, it's actually for everybody's safety as well as your own.
And I said, look, please don't because everybody needs to be safe, right? Not just you.
But I had to stop and think that's how much they want to be in the space, right? So it's an interesting space.
I've also had Muslim people join the space who are gay because they want to feel part of a community, but they can't be in a mosque.
