ShelbyGUEST
32:15
And when I read this article, oh, my gosh, like, the relief somehow in reading this and having language to express what I had been through, it was just like fireworks in my brain somehow, and, and also sort of concerning because before I sort of chalked it up to, oh, these are sort of unhealthy behaviors, you know, maybe not the greatest leadership, sort of just, you know, unhealthy leadership practices, and now I could say I'm reading my story in this article, and the, the language that's being used is spiritual abuse.
ShelbyGUEST
32:57
So I am an Enneagram 6w5, and I was like, "Hold my beer.
ShelbyGUEST
33:04
Let the research begin." And I just dived down this hole of under like, what is spiritual abuse? Is this actually what I experienced? Is this correct language to be using? Am I making too big a deal out of this? And I just sort of deep dive into this, and that is how I began to sort of engage with the language around spiritual abuse and understand that that actually is what happened to me.
ShelbyGUEST
33:28
So there was a lot of relief in that.

Welcome back to my channel.

My name is Dr. Tom Lahue, and we're gonna be talking about happiness today, a topic that is of great interest to me, probably because I'm an Enneagram seven.
Tom LaHueHOST
0:42
But this actually is a very difficult and challenging subject when you actually study what happiness is, what joy is, what the difference is, and we're gonna just look at it today from the perspective of the Enneagram.
Tom LaHueHOST
0:56
Um, what I find and discover is that most of us delay happiness.
Tom LaHueHOST
1:01
It's like, "One day, when I get what I want, when the world's right, when everybody treats me the way I think they should, when all the circumstances are right, then, and only then, will I truly be happy." So happiness becomes something that's deferred.
Tom LaHueHOST
1:19
We think that that next goal, that next accomplishment, as soon as we get that basement organized, then we'll be able to rest, then we're gonna be satisfied, then we're gonna be happy.
Tom LaHueHOST
1:30
But sometimes that never really comes, and life can get really challenging and discouraging and difficult sometimes.
Tom LaHueHOST
1:38
So we're going to, in our little laboratory of happiness, we're going to dissect this subject and look at it from the perspective of each of the Enneagram types.
Knox McCoyNARRATOR
1:56
The Baines family brand was essentially, what if HGTV and Jesus had a baby? Caspian Randolph III limped on stage next, still not completely healed from his shot-up scrotum that had been pilloried by paintballs in the previous episode's challenge.
Knox McCoyNARRATOR
2:09
Caspian's voting demographic was bolstered by the niche alliance of martial arts dads and youth pastors who thought the Enneagram was witchcraft, but somehow found Caspian's nascent Magirati—magic and karate—theology as both inspirational and acceptable.
Knox McCoyNARRATOR
2:22
That left Reba and Jimmy standing center stage as the contestants revealed to be in the bottom two.
Knox McCoyNARRATOR
2:27
The results would be revealed after the break because nothing in reality television happened without a commercial break for a new pharmaceutical product or local car dealership first.
Christina LiuGUEST
24:58
So we do spend a unit talking about personality types and also learning types.
Christina LiuGUEST
25:05
One large influence of me sort of delving into this also was, I can't remember exactly the year, but Steven Pierce, who's at USC, had published an article in AMT about using the Enneagram.
Christina LiuGUEST
25:20
which I hadn't heard of as another like personality, you know, kind of testing and how he uses in his studio.
Christina LiuGUEST
25:25
And I remember seeing that thinking, oh, this is so unexpected to see in, you know, a piano teaching magazine, but I found it really interesting.
Christina LiuGUEST
25:34
And so I had the pre like last couple of times I taught pedagogy, always incorporated that article into, as well as I remember in my pedagogy textbook, the Martha Baker Jordan one, there's, I can't remember the system now, but like just talk about, are you, is your student a dolphin or a bear or, you know, there's all sorts of sort of like these systems or quizzes in place to sort of like help you understand how people learn, right? Because I think, you know, humans love to sort of categorize things sometimes you know and so and there's so many different systems of that and so we spend a unit about it of how like these are ways that you can help you know teach or connect with someone but again they're also theories right and so they're not the law they're not the mlb all but these are just ways to help you think about how to engage with a wide variety of personalities that you'll encounter because you'll definitely encounter people who aren't like you so
Rachel EhringHOST
26:31
yeah for sure and i think it's human nature to be interested in ourselves, for lack of a better word, and like finding out, you know, we always, in my generation, you know, did the Cosmo quiz where you like, I don't know what, whatever are you? So it's kind of the same thing with all these personality tests.
Rachel EhringHOST
26:52
Like I, I'm interested in the Enneagram.
Rachel EhringHOST
26:54
I don't know a ton about it, but I think it's fascinating.
Kristy Woodson HarveyHOST
33:35
Yes, she's a disruptor, which is good.
Patty Callahan HenryHOST
33:37
I mean, I swear this should be like an Enneagram test.
Patty Callahan HenryHOST
33:40
You guys like Enneagram.
Patty Callahan HenryHOST
33:42
It's almost like that.
Patty Callahan HenryHOST
33:43
Like, I wonder if we could give, not right now, but give each character an Enneagram and see if it matches up with ours.
Meg WalkerPANELIST
33:52
My mom is watching and she says my thing is spot on.
Meg WalkerPANELIST
33:56
Okay.
SarahHOST
0:50
I don't know much about them, but I am excited.
SarahHOST
0:53
But Matt is also a pastor and spiritual director and Enneagram coach, and he's a co-host of Stay Curious podcast.
SarahHOST
1:00
And I'm just really excited to talk about faith and hardcore and anger and spirituality and emotional honesty.
SarahHOST
1:06
So, yeah, I'm stoked.

56 MINS LATER

SarahHOST
57:09
I actually want to know, I want to know more about.
SarahHOST
57:13
Um, cause I was actually, I was actually going to talk about this digital loneliness and you've already really pretty much said everything about it, but I'm actually interested in your work that you do.
SarahHOST
57:24
Like you being a spiritual director, you're doing Enneagram work.
SarahHOST
57:27
Like I'm, I'm just interested in people.
Beatriz AcevedoGUEST
19:35
Like I have everything that is like, oh my God, no.
Beatriz AcevedoGUEST
19:37
Like Enneagram number three.
Beatriz AcevedoGUEST
19:39
Like any way you look at me, you're like, oh, this woman is very stressed.
Beatriz AcevedoGUEST
19:43
um so cooking is the one thing that really decompresses me that i truly unplug my mind well obviously also like a sound bath or something eventually i can relax but but i would say cooking is something that i love i mean i try to do meditation um i mean even doom scrolling there are moments that i'm like i've had such an intense day that i need to go on my pinterest and just look at whatever be happy with a flower on the boards just with my finger but yeah I mean I I I'm trying to be better I would I've never been the example of somebody who puts I'm trying to now not put myself at the end of my to-do list but I've definitely done that throughout my life and now I'm trying to not feel guilty for prioritizing rest or for prioritizing a vacation or for prioritizing going to the gym at maybe a time that I feel like, oh, could I really take a class at this time? It's too early.
Vanessa BentleyGUEST
53:53
Jessie's a newer friend, but I'm really invested in her because I just think she's gold.
Vanessa BentleyGUEST
53:58
Jesse, if you know the Enneagram, she's an eight on the Enneagram.
Vanessa BentleyGUEST
54:01
Jesse will read your mail, tell you who you are, kind of smack you upside the head in love.
Vanessa BentleyGUEST
54:07
And everything is blunt and true and awesome.
Linda BriertyGUEST
6:15
These are archetypes that can be explored actually and studied.
Linda BriertyGUEST
6:19
And even the Enneagram talks about this, like where does our ego get stuck? For example, let's say you're always in a helper mode.
Linda BriertyGUEST
6:25
That's your habitual story, right? I always have to help.
Linda BriertyGUEST
6:29
That's my role.
Leah Ray GatzHOST
9:34
What are your next steps? Where do you want to grow from here?
Tim CotterGUEST
9:38
So, rather than next steps, probably the ultimate goal is who, a lot of people have heard of the sort of my, and the DISC, and the Enneagram, so those personality assessments that are quite globally recognized, and most of those are around personality, not sincerity values.
Tim CotterGUEST
9:57
So, the vision that I have for the work that I do is for, particularly the assessment tools, to be on a par with sort of the Myers-Briggs and the DISC profile as the values tool of choice across the world.
Tim CotterGUEST
10:13
But in terms of next steps, it's really just to keep growing and get more and more organisations, coaches and consultants using the tools.
