Storytelling is not just about producing content. It is about helping people understand your mission, care about your work and become part of your story. Peter Murphy Lewis, board chair of the Miami…
And, and as somebody who's listening to this, maybe it's an executive director, CEO, board chair of another community foundation, how should they approach dig- I'll call it digital marketing and digital presence? If, if there's, if they're very basic now, how do you even look at it and engage the board in a discussion on it?
... know, and I, I think, and I mean that sincerely because three years ago, I don't know if she would say that she was good at digital marketing, but she has figured it out.
Uh, you know, she, she meets with somebody on my team, and she says, "Here's the 15 events that are happening in our entire county, and we wanna get that information out more effectively with a take on it, why it's good for us, and why we should support it." So we're, we're essentially repurposing with Tammy's perspective and eye and love for the community on top of the content that's already being out there and trying to do it in a succinct, effective, efficient manner across multiple platforms, not just video, not just SEO, not just Google Ads, not just LinkedIn, uh, and then making sure that that information goes out to all the board members.
"Hey, we need a like, we need a comment, and we need a repost," because we're the people who are already connected, right? So it's, it...
I would say the key to it is just repurposing what you're already good at, and Tammy's passion and voice is already great.
And you, you say something interesting there, even having board members just like and resend or, or whatever, right, and forward.
And, and oftentimes I'll, I'll be doing board retreats and people go, "Oh, I don't even know how to do that." But you created that as an expectation among your board that y- "Here it is.
Yeah, and we try to get it out right away, right? You know, the, the, the, the algorithms, the faster that you can get it out, uh, the more likely-
And then i- if necessary at the beginning, especially with new board members, today we elected a new board member, we'll send out a screenshot with an arrow saying, "Hey, here's the repost.
Add some extra words to it." And then we're doing stories about our board members, and we're tagging them.
So if, if, if Tammy tags you, Michael, and you accept it and you say a comment, now all of your network is gonna see what Tammy thinks about Miami County Community Foundation and, and the lovely place that we grew up in Kansas.
Oh, that approach is so spot on, making it very easy for board members to do it, even those who may be a little bit hesitant.
Would you talk a little bit about that? Why was that important? What was it, first of all, and why was that important?
