In Chapter 2 of *Persuasion* the Elliots and their close friends try to strategize about the family's pressing debt. This week we're joined by one of *our* closest friends (and our former co-host)…

Alexander WakelamGuestWe have gone off the rails and have actually decided that we're anti-feminist and hate women.
Hannah, we start all our discussions of persuasion with the question of what in this chapter does Anne do right? Because Anne doing right is such a feature of persuasion.

And I think, you know, the closest... view we get of Anne's sense of the moral right, which is only reported secondhand in this chapter, right? Because we're not even close to Anne's perspective yet in chapter two.

She's only being sort of described to us kind of by Lady Russell, like from the outside.

And so we encounter Anne as the sort of source of common sense, the person who Lady Russell consults when she is trying to come up with a budget, a household budget for the crushingly in debt Elliotts.

And what characterizes Anne's approach is that she is much more less interested in sort of a moderate approach, right? In trying to sort of sell her father and her sister on some like, you know, small reductions that maybe gradually they'll get used to.

So Austin writes, she wanted more vigorous measures, a more complete reformation, a quicker release from debt, a much higher tone of indifference for everything but justice and equity.

like, on the side of the angels, this is justice and equity and a high tone of indifference to all of these petty things like horses.
